Title

Pastel portrait of lady

Brief description

Pastel drawing on paper, unknown artist. The work is untitled so the identity of the sitter is unknown, a guess would be it is a portrait of a gentlewoman, middle-class, connected possibly by marriage to a local dignatory. The pose she has been placed in and the space occupied by her suggests to me the painting was commissioned to display her personal importance rather than her political superiority. Possibly a representation revealing the construction of the woman's inner character reflecting her benevolence and good works to the community. An estimated date: her clothes would suggest early 1900's give or take a decade.

Content description

Woman in half portrait pose. Soft monochromic colours relieved by soft warm ochre, bring a faded, yet elegant charm to this work. She is wearing a white hat which ties under her chin and a coat with a fur trim.
