Title

Drumhead Memorial Service, 1919

Brief description

Postcard, sepia tint, of the Drumhead Memorial Service, held on the southern side of the bandstand in the Town Square on Sunday 12th October, 1919, to commemorate those lost in World War One. The photograph is by Clutterbuck. There is a platform built by the bandstand which has a Union Jack hanging from the front. On top of the platform are two drums draped in black, which give the name to the service. Standing on the platform are four men and two women. From accounts. the men are likely: Rev. Gerard K. Oliver, Rector of Letchworth; Rev. Montague Sawtman, Rector of Willian; Rev. J. H. Bailey, Vicar of Norton; Rev. J. Crowle-Smith, Pastor of the Wesleyian Church in Letchworth. The two women are probably Captain Macfarland and Mrs Ricksbowness of the Salvation Army. (identified using an account of the service on http://lgcs.amolad.net/warmemorials1.htm).
