Martha Mary Webb first came to Letchworth in 1905. She trained in maternity nursing and midwifery Queen Charlotte’s Hospital, London. When Webb returned to Letchworth in 1910 she practised as a maternity nurse. In 1919 she became a welfare nurse for the Spirella Corset Company, working there for 22 years. Alongside this, Webb was Secretary of the Old People’s Welfare Committee. She also played a prominent role in establishing the Howard Over 60s Social Centre and further helped the community by setting up a chiropody clinic, and a meals on wheels service.
