Edmund Hunter first visited Letchworth, with his wife Dorothea, to view the Cheap Cottages Exhibition in 1905. Impressed by the opportunities in the new Garden City, the decision was made to move their business, the St. Edmundsbury Weaving Works there, from Haslemere in Surrey in 1908. The new factory building was created on Ridge Road, and their family home on Sollershott West. The Hunters were known as fair employers, providing staff with good working conditions and allowing them paid holiday. The designs created by the Weaving Works reflected the personal interests of Edmund and his son Alec, including heraldry, astrology, animals, nautical themes and natural forms.
